Avid has announced updates to its Media Composer and Symphony line of professional video editing and finishing software. Editors familiar with Avid will notice updates to Avid Media Authoring, allowing them to natively author to the JPEG 2000 codec, as well as package sequences that supports version tracking. Even though Symphony is a fine color correction tool in its own right, Avid is giving some love to DaVinci Resolve graders by improving the the way they link and re-link files. Jumping back and forth between Avid Media Composer and third party finishing applications will hopefully be easier than ever. Finally, what might be most exciting to non-Avid editors who are thinking about jumping into Avid is an improved set of timeline controls. For example, one big point of frustration for editors coming from Final Cut Pro, Premiere, or Vegas has been Avid’s lack of drag-and-drop editing. In the past, adding clips to the timeline has required a keystroke or button press, making the interface feel alien to editors unfamiliar with Avid’s workflow. It’s clear Avid recgonizes this and has added drag-and-drop functionality, along with other tools, to ease that transition.
